Philip Raskin

Born in 1947, Philip studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1960s. However, due to his father’s untimely death, he postponed his career in art, leaving art school to enter the business world where he remained for the next 30 years. For 20 of those years, he was the well-known proprietor of ‘The Inn on the Green’, a celebrated jazz restaurant, in Glasgow.

During this time however, Philip continued to be involved in the arts by running a schedule of exhibitions and openings within the venue. Following his leaving of the restaurant in the 1990s, Philip returned to his easel and brushes and has since become a successful and renowned full-time artist. He lives and works from his studio just outside Glasgow.

Philip’s unique style is instantly recognisable combining a heavy impasto application of the paint alongside more delicate and sensitive brush strokes, more usually associated with watercolour. Focussing mainly on landscape paintings, his inspiration comes from the Islands of the West Coast of Scotland with Barra, Islay, Jura and Arran being some of his favourite locations. He deftly captures the essence and light of the landscapes through his work – the rugged shorelines, dramatic seascapes and ever-changing skies.

The overall effect quite magically captures the moods, light and textures of his native Scotland and Philip’s intuitive use of colour and narrow palette radiates a sense of peace and tranquillity.

Philip’s work is collected throughout the UK and abroad and he has built up a loyal following.
